First of all, what a beautiful cover on this book, just look at it! I admit that I have had a print copy of this book on my bookshelf since it was released. I finally took time out from my large TBR pile to catch up on this series and I am so glad that I did. As I am not normally a reader of paranormal or magical realism, it really takes a great author to get me to pick up a title in one of these genres. Darynda Jones is one of the very few authors of paranormal that I trust to deliver a delightfully fun, sexy, and heartfelt story. Her world-building is fantastic. I devoured Betwixt, Bewitched, and Beguiled and now I can't wait to read the next in this series, Moonlight & Magic, which will release in October 2021.

I'm absolutely in love with this series. I read all three books in about 3 days, I could not put them down! I think this 3rd book is my favorite so far, the world building is solid at this point and the heroine is fully committed to her role so the plot is really starting to get going. This book had a lot of little fun plots and mysteries and they were all tied up nicely by the end with other longer plot threads gaining significant ground. A lot happened in this book, plot wise. I CANNOT wait for the next books. Loved it!

Defiance “Deph” Dayne is a charmling. What’s a charmling you ask? Um, a super powered witch, I guess? In any case, charmlings are special and there are only three of them in the world at any given time. Deph seems to be extra super powered, but what does she know? Nothing because she only just found out she is one and at age 44 to boot. Learning this stuff on the fly is proving very trying for Deph, but at least she has help from her motley crew. Now, she just needs to be ready for the storm that’s coming. And maybe she could jump the bones of the hot wolf shifter in the basement? Pretty please? Nom nom nom! 

 

This series is cruising right along with villains, magic, nommy hotness, humor, and mystery. Deph can be a tad bit annoying, but for the most part she’s humorous. Annette is a great best friend. Better than I would be after Deph altered my state of being. Roane is all hotness. Nom! In all honesty, I like all of Deph’s crew. The villains are a bit doofus-y though. But the longer I think about it, I believe this tale is meant to be more light entertainment than serious my-ass-is-in-mortal-danger type of stuff. Oh, there’s danger. However, it’s not pushing me to the edge of my seat. If that makes sense. Anyway, I’m enjoying this series as a getaway from real life trials and tribulations and that’s all that matters, right?

An HJ Top Pick!!

So crazy good that it had me alternately biting my nails and laughing my head off, Darynda Jones never fails to entertain. But I have to say that Beguiled was my favorite in Defiance’s trilogy, as part of the Betwixt & Between series.

Beguiled was the kind of book that I wanted to hurry through to find out who was after Defiance and her crew, but yet I wanted to take my time and savor the moments I got to spend with Darynda’s words.
