Lots of fun, and does a pretty good job of pulling the same rabbit out of the same hat over and over with enough variety to keep things interesting. I think I would have enjoyed less of a central story and large-scale conflict, because it felt like it started to strain at the seams towards the end, but there are a lot of clever, enjoyable little moments where a flip is switched or a cool concept is introduced, which is largely what you come for. Easy to breeze through and if it’s your kind of thing there’s a lot to appreciate.

ANTIMEMES: UN COMPLEJO LABERINTO SIN SALIDA

The is No Antimemetics Division (No Hay División Antimemética) - Qntm (2021)

Whoah.

Okay, first up, my friend lent me this book because he said it was next to impossible to find, and when he handed it over he said he had looked it up that morning and the only available copies were running around $1k. So I have been mildly terrified about ruining this physical copy, BUT! Just saw that the book has been picked up by a major publisher and will be broadly available in October 2025.

Which is great, because this book was so good and incredibly unique. When my friend was trying to describe the idea of an antimeme to me, my initial thought was that this is the kind of abstract idea that almost has to be explored in fiction. Putting story around it grounds what can feel like an impossible theory. How do you talk/write/imagine that which inherently cannot be remembered or shared?

The story itself is fascinating - super grounded in the realities of beauracracy and office politics and relationships and work/life balance while simultaneously being rooted in some of the most abstract science fiction/fantasy ideas I've encountered. The only books I can think of that come somewhat close to being similar are The Rook Files by Daniel O'Malley, but this book doesn't have any of the occasional wink, nod, snark of that series. The collection of shorter stories in a shared world with the same key characters also reminds me a bit of the origin and feeling of Wool - nothing about the plotlines or writing is similar, but in the sense of this feeling like this was shorter form internet fiction that was just too good to not eventually breakthrough and be published as a collective novel.

Excited for this to be published mainstream, I have to imagine this will get optioned for TV or film. Read it before then if you can find it!

The first chapters are great. But, as the book continues to become a longer story against the main villian, it loses a lot of quality.
Some stories are great, some are much less, but overall it's still enjoyable.

Lovecraft meets Sci Fi.. Mind bending and enjoyable even if sometimes a little hard to follow.
