A difficult read for me at some points as a Taiwanese American myself. I thought it was too pessimistic but appreciated the satirical perspective and really enjoyed the last chapters with OB and the history of the laws and how the story wrapped up with the same realization and acceptance of my own American identity and experience. This book has verbalized everything I’ve ever wanted to say but didn’t have the words for.

This book was amazing. Complicated but also amazing. I think I would have been better of to read it vs listening to it as it is written very much like a script. I keep trying to describe it to people and it just isn't working. The plot is complicated bc it floats in between the ether of reality and the flat world of tv scripts and racial stereotypes. At times characters exist without names, just placeholder description of old asian man, older brother, kung fu guy. Multiple characters can embody those descriptors at time bc who they are doesn't matter even though it does. I work in film and television so i definitely appreciated the writing style and the points that were made. I loved the books so much and just really enjoyed the magical realism along with the strong points about racism and what it is to be Asian in America.
