As an “ambiguous asian woman”, I found Interior Chinatown insightful, funny, sad and so so real of the Asian American experience. It was a bit hard to follow at times on audiobook but a quick read and accurate of the invisibility and harm asian men face. I’m currently watching the tv show which differs a bit from the novel although it’s very entertaining.

I really struggled with the screenplay format. This book definitely had good things to say and I'm excited to watch the show, but it was a challenging reading experience for me.

Willis Wu is a Generic Asian Man, although he dreams of one day becoming the ultimate Asian: The Kung Fu Guy. But as he works his way up from small acting roles, he starts to wonder why he wants the part - and if that is all he can ever be. This novel is a fresh examination of (East) Asian-American identity in a country defined by White and Black.

Presented as a tv script, this book's form and function work perfectly together. It's smart and satirical without losing its warmth. That being said, I'm not personally drawn to script-writing, screenplays, plays in general, etc. so while I appreciate what Yu's doing, it isn't a book that I particularly enjoyed reading - because scripts just don't do it for me (even though this is more than a script...but you know what I mean).
