Sad. I’m glad this book didn’t end on a hopeful note. The state of our healthcare system doesn’t deserve it. It forces us to sit in and process the mess we are in.

This was such a powerful and eye opening book. I've probably though more about this book in 2021 than any other. It is often incredibly hard to read but also amazingly powerful. People think I'm joking when I tell them that UPMC has a branch in Italy.

This book was a beast and a lot to get through. It is an in-depth look at the US healthcare system, highlighting a small hospital in Ohio. From bedside anecdotes and patient stories to corporate level decision making and public healthcare policy, this book really covers it all. It’s a dense book with a lot to get through, but the really gets you thinking.

this is a smart book. alexander is a capable writer, and his reporting is so comprehensive, you feel how important this is to him, and how time-consuming it must have been. we all know the american healthcare system is crap, and presenting it this way, with a small town as the center, is a good way to make it real for people. it touches on local, regional, state-wide, and national issues, always bringing it back to the people in this small town. there is reporting that a wisconsin resident will perk their ears up at - Menards, the Uihleins, Scott Walker, etc. epilogue of covid. doesn't give much hope, but a good understanding of the problems, and a realization that this is too big for one person to fix - this requires systemic change.
