This version is actually a collection of three short stories by Poe: "The Gold Bug", "The Sphinx", and "William Wilson". I enjoyed all three, especially "William Wilson" (which, to me, had the most ominous undertones). "The Gold Bug" was more entertaining (and funny) than I anticipated. I'm familiar with both Charleston and Sullivan's Island, so it made the story even more interesting.

I surely would have enjoyed this story a a lot more if the word "negro" wasn't thrown around every other line. Even more so if the black character in question, Jupiter, wasn't pictured as a kind idiot.
But even without going into this issue of racism the story wasn't overly great. At the end the mystery is revealed in too great details for my liking, making it rather boring which is a shame because the overall plot came from a rather interesting idea.
