I adored "We Were the Lucky Ones"and this book is also SO GOOD! Lili's friendship with Esti reaches a selfless level when she suddenly needs to protect and care for Esti's son Theo just as she would his own mother. Enter in a sweet, blossoming romance midway through and my heart melted! LOVED! The one discrepancy is that Theo should have been maybe 5 years old because his vocabulary and abilities do not match that of a 3 year old. I loved that the author explored this Italian WWII perspective!

I absolutely loved this book. Another excellent read by Georgia Hunter.
Historical fiction + the Holocaust.
Lili and Esti have been best friends since university. As the war unfurls across Italy, both Lili and Esti find themselves in occupied territory when Germany invades northern Italy.
Esti convinces Lili that they need to run and hide, which eventually lands them in a convent in Florence. When disaster strikes, Esti asks Lili to take her son and keep running.
Lili & Theo set out on a journey towards allied territory as she does everything she can to keep them safe from the Nazis.

This book. I need everyone to read it because it’s so underrated and deserves all the recognition.
I was hooked from page one and could not put it down, and ended up binge listening to it because I had to know what happened to Lili and Theo.
I haven’t read a Holocaust centered book that takes place in Italy, and it was really fascinating to learn what happened, how Germany invaded the north, what was happening in different cities and villages, about the occupation, how there were groups of people who were fighting to save and help the Jewish community, and more.
I adored Lili and her fierce determination to keep her best friend’s son safe, going as far as fake paperwork that changed his last name to hers and teaching this sweet toddler—who had no idea what was happening—to call him Mama. I adored their relationship and seeing Theo grow up.
It was heartwarming to see the people who did take them in, who were resisting, who were fighting to save the Jewish community in any little way they could, all while fully knowing it could get them killed.
And Thomas, gah, I adore him.
10000/10 recommend you read this one!
