A worthwhile read, but a tad short of greatness. The free and easy writing style is great, and some of the characters are interesting. Mrs. Stock and her cauliflower cheese were overdone, though. As the plot develops, it is sometimes easy to believe that the characters are finding things out, but sometimes the suspension of disbelief slips and we realize that the author is holding out on us. I don't mind if an author does that, but in a perfect world we don't realize she's done it until the reveal.

Diana Wynne Jones has no bad books, but this is not one of her best. There's nothing unpleasant about it, but it feels like a sketch that didn't get sufficiently filled out. The "enchanted glass" idea in particular is intriguing but then undeveloped. We never really find out what the glass does, apparently it's tremendously powerful but just as this is suggested the book ends. Another half of the book could have been in order! The scene of mayhem at an English country fair is amusing too, but could have been even more so (Wodehouse style).

It's Diana Wynne Jones - 'nuff said. ;-) I enjoyed the story and build-up of conflict and the complete chaos that ensued.

The only thing that surprised me a bit was the reveal of Aidan's parentage at the end. Did not see that coming and it felt a bit unnecessary...readingjag's review against another edition

I liked this, but wasn't really in love with it. Sometimes I think I'm not British enough to get it. Grumpy busybody old ladies annoy me, and the main character is really a middle aged man even though this is supposed to be a children's book. Some clever writing, but not all of the plot twists made sense to me in the end. The US cover is atrocious, btw.

As always, Diana Wynne Jones created a completely magical tale that draws you in. Her voice is so recognizable and Enchanted Glass is no exception. It's a book to just get lost in and escape the world around you.

I love everything Diana Wynne Jones writes, so I could be biased in saying how excellent this one is. The magic and myth, the characters, the balance of humor, eerieness, and suspense - all superbly balanced with room for the reader's imagination. Like many books from previous decades, read with care for some dated portrayals.
