I really dislike Michael Kramer and Kate Reading. They have such a big following and trying to do rereads with the audio is kind of painful. I have the audio at 2.70x speed, and it still feels like "gah I'm still not finished" but reading it instead makes me feel like the journey was enjoyable.

This book made me fall back into reading after not having picked up a book for 5 years. The story builds slow but has many plot threads that build and are resolved at different times so there is always something happening, even if it isn't the main story thread.

Slow, dense, giant fantasy books are usually hard for me, but I somehow flew through this one. It was so good! I finally understand the Brandon Sanderson hype. Some of the best word building I’ve ever read; I’m obsessed with the magic system(s); and the story and characters are fantastic (shoutout Jasnah, she’s my fav). Starting next book right now.

It would be 5 stars except that I hated the portrayal of the Parshmen/Parshendi (a group of dark-skinned people who are categorized as non-human and subjugated to chattel slavery). I think Sanderson was incredibly careless with his narrative here. I understand what he thinks he did with the narrative, but in my opinion he failed. It is extremely harmful and Sanderson def should’ve done better/done more research (or just not included this??). I really hope Book 2 addresses this better.

A solid fantasy epic that feels like a puzzle box you can untangle with enough careful attention. The characters are people I want to know or be, just exceptionally well-made lil people.
