Wow. I don’t even know where to begin. Well, it took me several months to finish this book, including having to start over because I took a short break and then forgot what was going on, oof. But oh the last quarter was really intense. My favorite moment was when
Kaladin leaped across the chasm straight into the Parshendi—time seemed to freeze—and then he inhaled the stormlight from the spheres in their beards. I audibly gasped
.

I loved the variety of characters that we followed, each with their distinct personality and tone. On to book two!

Not my cup of tea. The Mormon mythology/allegory was too obvious and heavy-handed, the descriptions were tedious, and I cared about exactly zero characters. Kaladin's depression was portrayed poorly, specifically his suicidality. It was used to approximate character "growth" and felt forced and fake. I probably could've tuned out a hundred times and not missed much, because the pacing is so slow.

If you want epic fantasy, where you actually care about the characters, read Lord of the Rings. Or Samantha Shannon. Or N. K. Jemisin.

Also, upset at the lack of LGBTQIA2S+ characters. When your worldbuilding is that extensive, and you describe every single character down to what they are wearing, their accent, the color of their skin, and there is ZERO queer representation, that feels like a very conscious choice.

This book was absolutely fantastic. While the vibe is much different from Mistborn, and feels much more like high fantasy (which I think it is), it stands apart from every other fantasy book I've ever read, and should I read the rest of the series, will probably become my favorites. The sheer depth of the world Sanderson has created here is phenomenal. I can't begin to explain all of the details because I still feel so lost on many of them, but that is because of their strength and how real the world feels.

The character building is fantastic as well, and I think it plays a big part in this book as setup for the rest of the series. Kaladin's character arc (or the beginnings of it) is gorgeous, and I love Dalinar and Adolin and Jasnah, and all of the various storylines explored throughout the book.

Sanderson's plotting is tight, as always, and while I had seen some reviewers mention the hugeness of the climax, I didn't really sense that because I thought the rest of the book was paced very well, and I think I'd gotten emotionally invested enough in the characters by that point that it didn't feel as shocking as it could have. I have a feeling the big plot twists will come later in the series. But that epilogue was distressing, to say the least. I can't wait to continue.
