YESSSS this book was perfect in every way (at least for this particular reader). Set eighteen years after the previous volume, this one finds a young girl being basically blackmailed by her uncle (a character from the previous book) into coming to live with him and learning to sword-fight. And it's AWESOME. Even when the teenage characters are being dumb or doing dumb things, you're not like "ughhhh you're so dumb" you're like "aw, you're so dumb, but you'll learn!" And mostly the teenager characters are doing awesome things, including learning confidence (and sword-fighting) and exploring their sexuality and challenging jerks to duels. And at the end I was just like, "YEAH! Teenagers doin' it for themselves!" Seriously, this was super fun and great. A.

If only young me had known this book existed, I simply do not know who I would be. We've got gender in spades, we've got bisexuality in almost every character, we've got sword wielding girl-bosses, we've got a town over run with scoundrels and rogues in every alleyway, we've got long parted secret lovers, we've got the besties of all time, we have tragic back story, we have rakish back story, we've got it all!

This is possibly my first foray into the fantasy of manners genre and while I enjoyed it, I am also hoping to find some books that rate a bit higher still. I generally rooted for the main character and really like seeing her embrace the more masculine lifestyle foisted upon her by her uncle, while still maintaining friendships with other characters. The middle bit dragged slightly, and I didn’t like that pretty much all the gay men are depicted as depraved or mad in some way. Overall 3.5 stars.
