He tardado en coger estos libros porque temía que fueran demasiado fuertes para mí. Por suerte están dentro de mis límites, porque me encanta la manera de narrar del autor. No tanto las descripciones asquerosas que hay a ratos, sino más bien la elección de palabras, cómo te lleva por la trama, cómo crea el ambiente de cada relato, etc. No sé si me explico. Para mí, escribe de maravilla y por eso quiero seguir leyendo (además de que tiene unas ideas muy originales en cuanto a tramas).
Veamos, vayamos por volúmenes:
El Volúmen I es el que más me ha gustado en líneas generales (tomando el volúmen como un todo), siendo la primera historia "El libro de Sangre" la que me parece que tiene más fuerza e impresiona.
"El tren nocturno de carne" es muy imaginativa, y aunque el final creo que se le va de las manos, la ambientación de terror que crea a lo largo del relato me pareció brutal.

Del Volúmen 2 destaco especialmente la historia que da colofón al libro: "Los nuevos crímenes de la Calle Morgue", mi favorita con diferencia. Homenaje a la historia de Poe pero al más puro estilo Barker. Me ha gustado mucho y la narración (que como mencionaba antes es lo que más me gusta del autor) brilla especialmente en este relato.
"Terror" también me gustó bastante, recordándome un poco al aire de las películas de "Saw" (no se parecen en nada, pero me las recordaba). Premisa muy interesante, aunque con momentos difíciles de tragar.

Por último, el Volúmen 3 es el que menos he disfrutado en líneas generales, ya que en este volúmen el autor da rienda suelta a lo más desagradable que se te pueda ocurrir, y ha habido historias que he leído con una constante mueca de asco. PERO, por otra parte, las tramas sí que me han parecido interesantes, y para muestra destacaré la historia que más me costó leer y la que más me gustó.
La que me revolvió un poco el estómago fue "Cabezacruda Rex". Es muy asquerosa, sangrienta y escatológica. Pero por otro lado su trama me parece fascinante y muy buena. Es solo que, en mi opinión, se le fue mucho la mano con los fluidos... Pero la premisa me parece bestial.
El relato que más me gustó fue "Restos humanos". Me pareció buenísimo y no podía parar de leer. Tiene una escena especialmente escalofriante en un baño (no digo más). La trama me encantó (es mejor no conocerla para disfrutar más de la historia) y los personajes están tan caracterizados que casi parece que los conoces. Muy amena y que engancha una barbaridad.

En general unas lecturas que no son para todo el mundo (en el sentido más sangriento de la palabra) pero que tienen una pluma buenísima y buenas dosis de originalidad.

I really enjoyed this collection of effective and evocative tales. Clive Barker's reputation for gore-soaked eroticism is well earned, but there's some more subtle, atmospheric writing to be had as well as he shifts perspective between characters. The stand outs in my opinion were 'In the Hills, the Cities', 'Dread', 'Son of Celluloid', 'Jacqueline Ess: Her Will and Testament', and 'Pig's Blood Blues'. I would recommend this to any horror fan

Probably the finest imaginative collection of the macabre I've read since I first discovered Lovecraft.
No wonder Barker exploded onto the horror and pop culture scene in the 1980s with this superb collection as his debut.
Whilst there is some common traits e.g Barker's obsession with sexual desire, lust and body horror; no two stories are the same. There is a huge amount of variety here.
From B-movie monster horror (Rawhead Rex), to James Herbert esque dark ghost stories (Books of Blood) and much, much more.
No wonder Barker exploded onto the horror and pop culture scene in the 1980s with this superb collection as his debut.

I reread this, and while I maintain that this is still very much a wonderful piece of grotesquery that sets the imagination ablaze with some really beautiful/disgusting things, I realized something.
Barker's prose can be very dry and detached at times. When it came to the characters it always felt like we were at arms length from them. It was like at any moment they can and will suffer, which helped to put us on edge, but also made me not care for anyone when they died. This wasn't true for all the stories, but it's what I got from most.
The parts he does excel in is the atmosphere, and unpleasantness of the gore. Because while it should be unpleasant, his ability to create some vivid imagery with the prose makes for some wonderfully beautiful moments. He does very well fusing beauty and lust with gore and despicable things.
Not to mention, the things he comes up with just blow my mind. In the City, In the Hills is one of the most beautifully haunting and just flat out unthought of. It's what makes the highlight out of all these stories.
