Trigger warnings: possession, violence

Read this book for Latinx Book Bingo as my Rec'd by a Latinx Reader square. Thank you Cande for the recommendation!

This was a super fun and short novella! I really enjoyed the lore and history of the magic integrated in the story. The idea of an island full of magically gifted Latinx people sounds like a super good time haha. I honestly wish I was part of the Cartagena family, demon possession and hypnotism aside! I was really surprised with how well the story was constructed, considering how short the novella is and how big the cast is. I definitely would've liked it a little longer, I feel like with this type of world this could've been an amazing companion series with one book highlighting each Cartagena sister. I also think the shortness took away from some of my enjoyment for the romance. I could feel the chemistry between the main characters and liked how they worked together to save their families, but I wanted more! It felt super fast for them to be childhood nemeses, strangers, and then lovers all in 100 pages. Would definitely recommend for a cute, sexy read though!

A cute story but written in a young adult feel. Aka hit you over the head with the information. No subtlety. But a fun little vignette of a world.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 Stars

This was so funny. It’s incredibly short but a lot happens in those 100 pages. Alexis builds the story and the character’s relationship in a way that doesn’t feel rushed but has it all, a magical world, exorcisms, rivals to lovers, a wedding, action, magic, witches. It was great, of course I would love to have more time with the family and explore Isla Bruja and I would totally be on board if this was a series of novellas with the different siblings.

I should probably rate it 3 stars since it was a simple story and short, but I was too entertained and it made me laugh a lot. So there you go, 4 stars.
