this book had every possibility of becoming a favorite of mine, the childhood connection, the dark characters, the tropes, but unfortunately it was boring... now I completely adored the family and I can’t wait for their books, but the main couple??? boring af, there’s no angst or even development of their relationship

“She wants the fire. She wants the thorns and the razor-sharp branches. She wants the eternal fucking darkness. She wants to sit beside the king on his treasured throne of bones.”

I am so happy Amanda picked this book for friends choose 24 in 2024. It has been on my radar for some time, but I just hadn’t pushed it to the front of my TBR. I am livid with myself that I didn’t read it sooner. Tillie is the first author in at least a decade that shocked me with her plot twist. I loved every single second of this book. I went in completely blind and would recommend others to do the same. It was an absolute adventure. Check triggers and content warnings before reading- especially if you have issues with dark themes. I would love to see more from this world and these characters because they will be sticking with me for a very long time.

I loved Arthur and Cheska and the rest of the Adley Firm. I need more in this world! Great story with twists and I honestly didn't want to put it down. I can't wait for more!

Great read.

LOVED this book!! It took me a while to begin reading this book!! Great storyline and I’m so glad nothing awful happened to Cheska except for the other things in the book of course. . Without spoiling too much.. it could have been worse for her. But she took it on the chin like the Dark Queen that she is and let her new life consume her. Arthur and Cheska are actually made for each other. And what a beautiful ending, just melts my dark heart

A cringier, darker version of Peaky Blinders with 10x more sex scenes. I’ll admit that I’m incredibly partial to a mafia romance, but the with the MC’s constantly referring to each other and themselves in the third person as the king and queen of “darkness”… I Couldn't. Stop. Cringing. On the topic of cringe, and maybe it’s just me, but when Arthur chose a haulage boat’s anchor chain as his weapon of choice during the fight in the pit. I just couldn’t stop getting the ick, imagining him swinging a chain about the place😭

Also, I’m genuinely baffled at how high this book has been rated because if you take away the inner and outer monologues of our self-proclaimed “king” and”queen”, there be a 100 pages left  in plot? And sometimes it’s nice to read a book lacking any sort or substance but unfortunately, I severely disliked how Arthur treated Cheska. Trauma or not, he was a prick.

There’s much better mafia romance books out there, where the female characters are treated like human beings rather than sex dolls.
