depending on the poem profound, witty, sad or some combination of these. a nuanced view of the human experience stripped down to the bone and restructured simply and elegantly.

favorite poems: “thoughts that visit me on busy streets” “teenager” “assassins” “identification“ “portrait from memory” “vermeer” “highway accident” “in fact every poem”

A superb collection; read it one sitting and every turn of a page was a giddy step on the journey through Wisława Szymborska's lovingly crafted Here. I adore her conversational language, deceptively simple subjects, and unexpected poetic resolutions. If i were to write anything as perfect as Identification, I would consider my work creatively fulfilled.

I had to pause for a moment to recollect my senses and my breath, because the poet had captured a memory of mine, a big fleeting memory, in a few short lines, somehow, from across oceans and scripts. How do writers do that? That's why literary analysis is meaningless sometimes- how can you analyse such a moment of pure connection?

Highway Accident

They still don’t know
what happened on the highway
half an hour ago.

On their watches
it’s just the same old time,
afternoonish, Thursdayish, September.

Maybe it’s just me but I don’t get it. Recommended to me by a friend.

I switched the edition I reviewed to better reflect the number of pages I actually read. The copy I actually read had the Polish poems on one side and the translated English poems on the other.

I don't really understand poetry so I don't feel like I can rate this. Some of the poems were nice but some I didn't understand or I didn't see the point of. I think with me my issue with a lot of poetry is that there's no context, maybe if I looked up more about the poems I'd be able to find the context or the meaning of the poems but at the moment this is maybe a 3 star book.

@Eliana this review is for you! I need to spend more time with Szymborska to say how this compares to her other collections, but I thought the second half was particularly strong. I liked every poem and loved some. Worth the price of the collection for the Vermeer poem alone.
