This book was so sweet. This kind of genre of young people processing large events/trauma has been really interesting to me recently. The innocence and honesty from Henry's perspective rang true for me. Although a lot of readers may not be 12 when reading this, the level of innocence and simple thinking is something I think everyone can resonate with to some degree. As a Chinese American who grew up in Seattle, this story hit home. It made me tear up, even cry, at some points. I have been painfully aware of the history of Japanese Internment camps in the PNW, I even happened to be driving past the fair grounds while listening to the part of the book regarding the same fair grounds serving as a 'relocation' camp. Additionally, I felt as though it was well formatted. Sometimes books jumping from past to present can be disorienting, but Ford did an incredible job of keeping the timelines and themes consistent and purposeful. I would highly recommend this book, put this at the top of your "must read" list!!

I loved this new take on the Japanese internment, especially now that I live in the Pacific Northwest.

What excellent storytelling, informative about a dark piece of American history but satisfying in the end.

Gives a very interesting perspective of Seattle during WWII.

Having read Amy Tan and other authors that capture the tension between mothers and daughters, I found it very interesting to read about the tensions between a father and son. I also recently read Unbroken which shed light on why Henry's father would have such a strong reaction against his Chinese son being involved with a Japanese girl.

A love story during a part of American history that is generally looked over - when the Japanese were put in internment camps during WWII.
