I often wish Goodreads had a 10 point scale, and this is one of those times as I hover between three and four stars. I'd give this a 7/10. I really enjoyed the historical setting, the story and the characters. On the other hand, the writing was a bit overdone and the chapters were too short, creating a choppy read. These short chapters also often had overly dramatic endings, which I could definitely have done without. The story felt like one Lisa See could have written, so fans of Lisa See as well as fans of historical fiction will enjoy this. Also great for book groups!

A Chinese boy and a Japanese girl meet and fall in love during WWII. Many forces conspire to keep them apart, not the least of which is the evacuation of Americans of Japanese descent to internment camps. Jamie Ford writes with great insight and compassion. A lovely love story!
