It took the rapidly approaching release date of Emily Henry's next novel to get me to finally read last year's release and I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. Funny Story has quickly established itself as my favorite Henry novel by a landslide.

I see pieces of myself in both Daphne and Miles, and for that I love them dearly. I've not come so close to crying while reading in a long time. To be a children's librarian, establishing herself in a picturesque town, with the love of her life...that's what I want.

Henry's way of writing dialogue and intimacy remains top-tier, I don't know how she does it. It feels effortless. There is no such pleasure like reading one of her stories. Bravo.

As a Michigander, I looooooved the settings. I noticed so many little nods to Midwestern culture and Michigan specifically. Such a sweet story that grabs you in.

I picked this up on a whim from the Lucky Day Reads* section in the library. Like the other books I've read by Emily Henry I finished in 2 sittings and had I not had to sleep the other night it would have easily been done in one.

Funny Story I feel is more about making friends as an adult, the stickiness of ones 30's, complex relationship with family members and a story about love in all its forms and the raw-ness in finding oneself after what was a terrible relationship with shallow narcissistic people. The book started off like a classic rom com but quickly delved into deeper parts of life without feeling heavy. Emily Henry has a knack for writing the breadth of a person's being that feels light, airy and fun with serious deep soulful scènes in between. This one despite being classified as a romance, and there is a heavy focus on romantic relationships didn't feel like a romance. it felt more like a little "Ode to Close Friends" .... and probably the reality of how hard it can be to make friends as an adult and how we sometimes mess that up.

All in all great fun and good times with plenty of laughter (or in my cake outward chortling). Recommend for readers who enjoy romance, stories about friends and self discovery after heartbreak.

This was such a beautifully written book that hit home with pretty much everything.
Daddy issues, idolizing Mom, more comfortable as a “we” than an “I”… Emily, I feel personally attacked.

With the romance specifically, I really loved Daphne and Mile’s chemistry and appreciated that neither of them
were hung up on their ex’s after the big breakup in the beginning.

Cutest book ever! The book had such a great storyline with little tidbits of advice I feel like I need to follow in my life now. Relating to Daphne wasn’t something I expected to do, given her situation, but as the book went on, I began to feel the things she was learning personally. The characters were lovable, there was great development, and the last page was 10/10. Cannot wait to read another book by Emily Henry!

A really fun read that you don’t realize is using romance tropes until later. The library/reading love is a bit over the top and more enraptured than it needs to be.
