This book was a perfect mix of romance, self-reflection, friendship and family dynamics. I really love the way Emily Henry takes the romance genre and makes it more profound, more complex - all the while being really funny, too. Only reason why this didn't get 5 stars is because the smut scenes gave me whiplash, and I couldn't fully get into them because I was scared a family member was going to interrupt them halfway through. But other than that, this is great.

I'm glad I didn't give up on Henry after disliking People We Meet On Vacation so much 💕

I loved this book!

Emily Henry creates such realistic and relatable characters. At first I wasn't sure I was going to like Miles but, I think, that's exactly how we were meant to feel. We grow to love Miles right alongside Daphne. Just as we realize and accept her faults at the same time she is growing and changing and learning to love herself too. It was such a powerful book and I found myself questioning whether or not I do any of the hurtful behaviors shown in the story. I don't think I do, but I know I'll be more aware of my own reactions to similar situations going forward!

One of the things I really loved about Daphne and Miles relationship was how it also depicted the growth of such a strong friendship. I tell people all the time that my husband is my best friend and that's something I feel romance novels sometimes forget to include. When we're picking life partners we're not just choosing someone that we find attractive and want to get in bed with. We are picking someone we want to spend the rest of our days with. Someone we want to share our highs and lows with. Someone who we can lean on during times of high emotion and chill with on the most mundane of Tuesdays. Miles and Daphne have that foundation.

Book Lovers was easily one of my favorite books of last year, and while I'm not sure if I'll rank Funny Story as one of my top of this year, I will most definitely be recommending it to people as worth reading if they like Book Lovers. Looks like I need to read more by Emily Henry!

Edited to add: Oh! Something else I really loved about this book was their age and maturity! These are 30+ year olds. People who feel like they should have their lives together at this point and, while established in careers that bring them joy, they are still feeling that pressure of what it means to be an adult in the modern world.

It took the rapidly approaching release date of Emily Henry's next novel to get me to finally read last year's release and I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. Funny Story has quickly established itself as my favorite Henry novel by a landslide.

I see pieces of myself in both Daphne and Miles, and for that I love them dearly. I've not come so close to crying while reading in a long time. To be a children's librarian, establishing herself in a picturesque town, with the love of her life...that's what I want.

Henry's way of writing dialogue and intimacy remains top-tier, I don't know how she does it. It feels effortless. There is no such pleasure like reading one of her stories. Bravo.

This was a great read. I thought it would follow the fake dating trope and be the cliché but it was a different take on it. I liked following Daphne's personal journey and felt for Miles when we finally learnt what he had been through.
Definitely one to keep and a new author to add to my favourites list.

Emily Henry you did it again. I don’t think anything will beat booklovers for me, but this is so good too! I thought she’d never make me root for these two but in the end I’m crying and cheering them on. Her banter is ALWAYS hilarious and makes me laugh out loud. I loved all of it. The best emotional romance book this year so far! Any romance reader who loves banter and amazing character development and a moderate amount of smut would love this one.
