this was a cute read. it definitely confirmed the point that i would hate being a princess with all of the rule following and public scrutiny but I'm glad Izumi was able to find a balance between her old life and her new one by the end of it. I think that some of the writing was a bit cringy but nothing that bad. I thought the romance was cute but I was kind of confused at when they started liking each other. I did wish that we had more moments of Izumi and her dad although I understand why they didn't see each other that much. I'm glad that her dad was able to connect more with her at the end. overall a very cute read. i don't know if I connected to the characters that much but I definitely felt for her and her situation.

This was by no means a perfect book but it was enjoyable and cute and the perfect palate cleanser. Think modern day The Princess Diaries meets What a Girl Wants, but set in Japan and with a deeper message of cultural identity and belonging. The romance was a little cheesy and I’m sure there were definitely inaccuracies regarding Japanese culture. But if you want to just turn your brain off and have a mostly good time with a YA book, then pick this one up! I listened to the audiobook and it was well done too!

Tokyo Ever After didn't work for me because I didn't feel invested in the story line or the characters. It also felt too similar to The Princess Diaries which I know was the goal but it had a lot of simarities.
