Tamora Pierce again builds a new city with its own people and customs and problems. I liked meeting Keth and Glaki and Chime and many of the various side characters.

I felt like the serial killer plotline was so stalled throughout the book -- each murder a repeat of the last, with Dema getting foiled by the priests as well as the constraints put on him through his rank as a member of the First Class. But then as soon as Keth started helping, this story resolved perhaps too neatly.

I find Tris to be so frustrating because she's so reactive and, often, rude. For someone who likes reading and learning, I was surprised by how little she understood the customs in this city; she doesn't need to accept them, but she must understand them in order to work within them. Overall, I enjoyed the characters and their interactions, found the setting to be intriguing, and was underwhelmed by the plot.

My girl really came to a new country and said "adult men are nothing to me" and everyone clapped. Tris truly occupies the most uncomfortable place on the cusp of adulthood- sharp enough, and credentialed enough to deserve to be taken seriously, but still young enough and sheltered enough to have major missteps navigating this new adult world. But there will never be a part of me that doesn't enjoy watching this bad-tempered 14 year old completely overwhelm fully adult men at every opportunity. As fun as it is, it's also extremely rewarding to watch someone with so many internalized prejudices slowly but surely learn to be better and gentler and just. Tris is given the opportunity to soften internally to be able to lower her defenses when necessary to connect to others without sacrificing the sharp edges that make her a formidable protector. I do Street Magic and Cold Fire were switched- I've always loved the dynamic between Briar and Tris, and even when separated their stories still serve as foils to an extent. Briar learns how to unleash his destructive potential while Tris is desperate to contain hers.

My usual gripes about criminality in this series aside (and in the acknowledgements she does go into talking a little bit about her sources in terms of criminal justice techniques, especially about The Mind of the Pathological Criminal, so I was right, thank you everyone) this maybe was my favorite one? Though I am uh Wary of Fantasy India's Caste Systems (and the Chekov's lowest caste) but I am not super qualified to comment there.

All that said, I did love the character relationships; it feels like Tris's apprentice was so beautifully constructed to clash with her in the most perfect ways, and to watch her grow and appreciate her being Mean but also so deeply kind and determined to stick to her obligations. Keth was such a great foil, it was fun having some more disabled representation in the series, and the magic stuff was super cool to watch unfold. It made me want more with him, and I'm excited to see what happens in the next series!
