My girl really came to a new country and said "adult men are nothing to me" and everyone clapped. Tris truly occupies the most uncomfortable place on the cusp of adulthood- sharp enough, and credentialed enough to deserve to be taken seriously, but still young enough and sheltered enough to have major missteps navigating this new adult world. But there will never be a part of me that doesn't enjoy watching this bad-tempered 14 year old completely overwhelm fully adult men at every opportunity. As fun as it is, it's also extremely rewarding to watch someone with so many internalized prejudices slowly but surely learn to be better and gentler and just. Tris is given the opportunity to soften internally to be able to lower her defenses when necessary to connect to others without sacrificing the sharp edges that make her a formidable protector. I do Street Magic and Cold Fire were switched- I've always loved the dynamic between Briar and Tris, and even when separated their stories still serve as foils to an extent. Briar learns how to unleash his destructive potential while Tris is desperate to contain hers.
