This book swept me up and carried me along. I was completely mesmerized. I’d expected it to be about Gornick’s complex relationship with her mother - and it is. But it’s also about discovering herself as a writer, as a sexual being, as a woman and how she explores and honors each of those aspects of herself - as well as her fierce attachment to her mother.

A small note: there is a Portuguese edition by D. Quixote. In my opinion the translation is really bad and makes the book feel completely different. So read it in English, if possible.

Vivid and specific and descriptive. The men bog it down toward the end or it would be 5-stars. In one of those weird coincidences that the universe sometimes offers, I read this right after reading Sheila Heti's "Motherhood," and now I want to write a graduate thesis comparing the two. They are nice companion books, with strong, searching women asking important questions and trying to find meaning in relationships, work, and art. Vivian Gornick's mind is gorgeous here.

Maybe my expectations were too high.
