DID NOT FINISH

UGH DNF@15%. This makes me very sad because I loved Lily Chu’s first book The Stand-In, liked the next two, but could not stand to get past 15% of this one. The main characters acted like children. I wanted to slap them both. Maybe if I was reading I could have gotten further by skimming through, but listening to the audiobook was a chore.

This book was different to what I thought it would be, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I think the politics side of things were less interesting for me, but I'm just not into that and so glaze over it when it comes up in books - unfortunately it took up a surprising amount of the book. I liked the characters and their development was nice, and the descriptive language was so good. I really want to visit this house!!!! The narrators were very good, and I felt it hit home a little with the whole "Wes feels like he needs to find things and has immense guilt over leaving his mum" thing. So, while it wasn't all for me, I enjoyed the characters and how they interacted with each other.

There were some mistakes with the book that kind of ruined some of the experience for me. There was a missing page break where the POV changed and the wrong word was used in a sentence.

I am a big fan of Lily Chu’s books, rhetorical audiobooks especially, however I think there was a distinct lack of tension between the characters that makes their budding romance worth listening to. The overall story is interesting but sometimes I think the plot wandered and it was hard to remember what they were looking for.

4.5/5
This was super cute! I really really enjoyed the element of mystery and whimsy with Dot's house and her story. I also loved that the conflict was something our main couple faces together instead of it being a conflict between them. Of course I'm also always going to like attention to detail with cat characters, that was a nice touch. This was a very sweet romance with good pacing and likeable characters, a nice light and easy read.
