I went into this book with different expectations. Initially, I thought it might lean into a fantasy element, especially with a lead nicknamed “Lady Death.” That twist would have added a unique edge, but instead, the story stayed firmly grounded in a contemporary rivals to lovers setup, which unfortunately didn’t work for me.

The plot had potential, with its mysterious mansion and a long buried literary scandal, but the pacing felt slow, and the characters didn’t really draw me in. I found the female lead difficult to connect with, and the romantic chemistry between the two main characters felt more forced than compelling. While some readers might enjoy the tension between the characters, I personally found it predictable and lacking emotional depth.

Overall, this book just didn’t hold my attention. It took me much longer than usual to finish, which is rare for me. While the premise had promise, the execution fell flat in terms of engagement and character development.

I loved this so much. A mystery romance. Yes. Just yes. The characters were written so fully. I loved the rivals to lovers dynamic as they tried to solve a mystery that holds weight in today’s political climate.

The audiobook performance was also amazing (of course it was, it’s Phillipa Soo) and got me through inventory. I was searching a dusty store as they were searching a dusty house

The characters are the best part of the book. Really enjoyed both MC’s. Dot was awesome and the cats stole the show. It is also not a typical romance as the MC’s don’t fall in love, get into a big fight, get separated and then get together by some miracle. I enjoyed the book 💙

Truly her best book I’ve read so far! The underlying author story was so interesting. But enough in the back that we didn’t focus too much. But the love story twisted and turned in such a beautiful way you couldn’t help but fall. I loved that we had dual POV! It was fabulous!

This was such a comfort read. All the tension was resolved maybe a bit too quickly and easily for my liking, but I enjoyed it.
