This is a layered multi-timeline and epistolary structure with non-linear pacing. Multiple pov's with emotionally driven character voices. time frames take place in three different time frames and three different locations. Where some information has been made up to make it fiction, it is based on historical events. Nazi evasion in 1939-1940, 1980, with the Berlin wall and 2020 during covid.

3.5 stars. This was ok. It was the February good morning america young adult pick. It had three timelines. 1941 in Germany during the war, 1980 in Germany before the Belin Wall was taken down and Spring 2020 at the start of Covid. I really enjoyed the 1941 storyline. That alone was 5 stars. But the book felt like a lesson. It was over the top sometimes. It was about resistance to oppression and injustice in all three timelines. I agreed with the message the author was trying to get across, and maybe for young adults it was needed. The 2020 timeline was where it tied in the other timelines and I did like that part. It was about identity and being who you were born to be. Great book overall. I would have liked the whole book to be the 1941 timeline. I don't think the 1980 timeline was needed at all. I think the 1980 and 2020 could have been little chapters at the end of the book. Not every other chapter a different timeline.
of Resistance and Love
A wise tale, with one theme and multiple characters spanning generations. Do something, even when that something seems small. And keep hope alive.

A stunning coming of age story about finding courage in the darkness, doing the right thing even if it's difficult, choosing hope in the darkness and learning to create a better world. It's beautifully written. The mix of fairytale and multiple pov. A story I won't forget.

I had been debating on whether or not to read this book since it came out. Now that I have read it, I did enjoy it. The chapters that were set in the 1940's and 1980's were enjoyable and I always like reading different perspectives, whether fiction or non-fiction, during different parts of history. It was also interesting to see how the timelines were connected and came together in the end. The chapters set during 2020 were interesting, especially the ones toward the end of the book and added another perspective on recent events in history.
