After a somewhat slow start that had me feeling (shock-horror!) a little conflicted about whether I would like this or not, when the plot picked up a bit it became virtually unputdownable. The last forty pages are a special kind of alchemy that I personally would call “I am crying my eyes out on an airplane and I literally cannot stop doing so”. I got suckered into buying this without reading first because I’ve loved Libba Bray since I was twelve and also I was at a book signing and panicked but I’m so so so so so very glad I own a copy of this magical book.

A necessary update three weeks later: still have not figured out how to not immediately start crying whenever I hear the opening guitar riff to "Heroes" by David Bowie!

The first 300 pages of this book were sooooo slooowwww and seemingly filled with nonsense. Then the “reveal” finally happened, all of the stories came together, and the last 1/3 of the book was engaging. I don’t think the 1980 storyline added much to the overall plot, but it could’ve been an interesting companion piece on its own. I could’ve done without the hare and the deer fairytales too; ultimately they felt like filler. It was oddly fascinating reading the 2020 storyline — so recent and indelible yet so much like a time capsule of a very specific shared experience. It felt like yesterday and a lifetime ago simultaneously.

What a gift this book is!! My eyes are swollen from crying. My throat hurts. My heart is broken and filled with hope. This book is beautifully tragic, hopefully romantic and more relevant than any of us want it to be. Thank you, Libba Bray. Thank you for this beautiful story.
