This story is a little difficult to get into just because it follows so many characters. But, I liked how the stories connected to one another and the little messages inside each story. The first story follows Sophie and Hanna growing up in Germany in the 1940's. Their friendship gets stretched and pulled as the two girls find themselves in the middle of the War. The next follows Jenny in 1980 who came to Berlin for the summer with her family. This story is about self discovery and exploration. Finally, the last story takes place in New York. It follows Miles and Chloe in 2020, they're two friends dealing with the pandemic and also a falling out they had with each other. This story wasn't my favorite to follow but they are necessary for this book and are still interesting to read about. You can tell the author put a lot of time and thought into how she laid out this book which I LOVE. I feel like this book is for people who love some drama but make it historical and mysterious. It's not people breaking in and some crazy violence its a story that makes you want to know how it ends. Not only the mystery solving but about people trying to grow and discover themselves.

This was a very angry book, and parts of it were even potentially triggering—especially the contemporary thread of storyline—but the story was beautifully told.
