As per usual, Tillie Walden created a beautiful book. The writing and art were gorgeous and the atmosphere was palpable. It’s hard not to feel immersed in the story. I had two problems with this book. One, a frequent criticism of Tillie Walden and a problem I had with On a Sunbeam, the characters all look very similar, so it’s easy to get confused with who’s who. My other issue was just that it was so hard to follow. I read this three times, and every time I was like, I think this happened? But it’s unclear. This is another common complaint in reviews. I highly recommend reading Warren’s review after reading because he gives a synopsis of everything that happens and it confirmed what I was unsure about and pointed out bits that I missed. The plot is supposed to be loose, but I do wish it was at least a little easier to follow. With that said, the confusion surprisingly doesn’t taint the reading experience all that much, or at least not as much as I would expect. The incredibly well created atmosphere makes the book pleasant to read regardless. This isn’t my favorite Tillie Walden book, but I still recommend it.

Tillie Walden is an incredible graphic novel creator. This story had me in tears. And really wanting a giant kitten that I could sleep on like a pillow and ride on like an elephant.

The story is elliptical, with vast space and indeterminate periods of time between some of the panels, and the art--especially the architecture--is stunning. In a land where winter is bitter and lasts for three years, what happens inside once a family shuts the massive doors of its labyrinthine castle at the end of summer...?
And to think Walden achieved this while still in high school.
