What a wonderful and weird book. Poetic, intriguing, devastating at times, confusing, enchanting, weird. Such a short read, but some images stay with you, some inexplicable feelings appear, like an avalanche, so fierce, but so frozen and still. I'm still not sure what happened at times while reading, but I know I will come back to it again for its strange beauty.

An extraordinary read, in such a small package. My first jump into Icelandic literature, and I was so impressed. The atmosphere of the book is so strong, and the few characters so cleanly drawn. Would recommend the novella to anyone. To everyone, even.

3.5 but rounded up. I really enjoyed the starkness of the writing, but wished I had spent more time with the fox and less time with the humans, though by the end, I understood why it had to be so.

This on, the surface, is a simple but compelling tale of a priest on a fox hunt and how his story intertwines with the other characters in the book

There's so much more to it than that but it's hard to describe what exactly. I am left with the feeling I am not quite sure what it is I've just read. So much so that I am not sure if I would recommend it. Not because I didn't like it; but because I wouldn't be able to gauge if someone else would like it.

Thanks to Lauren Whitehead as it was by watching "Reads and Daydreams" BookTube that I discovered this book.

lauren groff recommended this writing in a talk that posted on youtube, that's why i read it. I wasn't into. I had to look up multiple words in this book and each time it was the name of a bird.

I am sad to say that I didn't end up liking this as much as I thought I would. I decided I wanted to read something by an Icelandic author and in my searches, found this book that I was interested in. It turned out being a work I would categorize as literary fiction, which generally does not fit my tastes. It reminded me of something I would read for a class and write an analytical essay on. As such, it did not work for me.
As for the writing itself (which must be taken into account, is translated), I found it to be lyrical and poetic in some paragraphs. I really did enjoy the descriptions, both of the landscape and of what was happening. I didn't like the word choice and depictions of some aspects, which would be due to the fact the book is set in the 1800s. Combined with the plot that fell flat for me, I couldn't look past it. I am considering checking out more books by this author, but if all his works are literary fiction leaning, I might need to look elsewhere.

Beautiful. Not the type of book to read quickly, so you can soak up the language, but also the type you can read in one evening because of the length.
