My biggest wish is that this was a full fleshed book and not just a novella.
I absolutely loved the Noir vibes I got from this, the atmosphere and the writing are great!
Where this falls short for me lies in the fact I was left wanting - I would’ve liked more world building, more time and build up to really get a sense of the threat and to connect with the characters. Moreover, when it comes to these books that skirt the line between genres, I always want more balance and here I was wanting more sleuthing, more mystery and intrigue.

Nevertheless, this was an enjoyable read, loved the sapphic rep (also, a sapphic speakeasy? Um yes please!) and that ending is absolutely bittersweet and left me aching a little.

CW: Blood, gun violence, death, homophobia, religious trauma, conversion therapy.

This was a short and sweet LGBTQ+ noir-urban-fantasy piece that reminded me of the Dresden Files but better written (no offense, Jim Butcher).
SpoilerAnd bless you for not burying your gays, C.L. Polk.
