holy shit this book is so!! fucking!! good!!! it actually blew me away and now I actually feel so tragically single after reading Elena and Edith's story 😔😔

A fantastical/occult lesbian novel set in 1940s Chicago? Sure, I'll take it. Quick, engaging, and heartbreaking and -warming by turns. Very nifty and fun writing style. Really seemed to cross-pollinate with my recent hobby of reading about Chicago's 77 community areas on Wikipedia (St. Stanislaus? Dunning? I was just reading about those!). More books set in Chicago, please and thank you!

Plot or Character Driven: Plot

A forbidden love, a rocky family reunion, an intriguing rash of supernatural murders, a deadline fast approaching, and a deal with a devil. What could go wrong?
Given the length of this novella, there wasn’t much room for Helen’s character to really breathe, the author leaning instead on tropes of a cocky detective with a lot on the line. But while some other reviews disagree with the choice Helen makes at the end of the novella, it endeared me to her greatly. It drove home the point that this is a complete, consistent characterization, and in a novella that deals with such absolutes in the opposing forces of good and evil, I enjoyed Helen being resolute in her decisions to take what she needs from each side.
