This was just a quick read that entertained me. I liked the mystery of it, though at times it felt either predictable or too obscure that the author had to point blank spell it out for you. The story in general was straightforward and lacked depth, but I still found the relationships heartwarming and tender, even if we only had a short time developing the characters and dynamics (and I’m always such a sucker for yuri and sibling relationships). I liked the magical, supernatural aspect but it became too religious, which lost me, even if the lore was built well. The atmosphere in the beginning of the book really intrigued me, but it faltered midway through that you forgot it was a noir and it felt like any other mystery at any other time. Overall, the ending saved the book: we did know the end, but that didn’t make it cliche or stop me from being satisfied. Love is worth the damnation!

Who doesn't love a good versus evil story?! Full of magic, romance, and unexpected turns. Polk's writing will have you glued to the pages to see how this murder mystery turns out. (If you've seen the movie 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,' you'll definitely want to pick this up.)

Supernatural in book form - specifically the seasons with angels and demons.  Not a ton of character development but it's also 136 pages so that's not surprising.

Kortroman om en kvinnlig privatdetektiv som har magi, som utspelar sig i en noir värld ca 1940-talets USA. Änglar, demoner, vampyrer. Misogyni, homofobi. Vad ger man upp för dem man älskar?

OMFG - are you kidding me? This was on a lot of lists, and is my paranormal/mystery genre; so I read it. Maybe it's just too short but the story never really grabbed me. Then, you spend an entire story working toward a goal - only to throw it away ten seconds later, in what is obviously, clearly a terribly stupid decision??? I nearly threw my phone in annoyance.

And, once again I'm reminded that people who create "best of" lists seem to not be readers, but they see books on another list somewhere and are copying it; or, like the Goodreads awards, the entire list consists of books with a big PR budget. I don't know which; but I'm shocked that this was included.

The story was not good; but the writing was pretty good. I would look at other books by this author - just: not this one.

I loved the writing style in the beginning of the book and the character’s way of speech. But It falls off a bit as it goes on.

The story went by a little too quick and it’s hard to follow. The ebook formatting isn’t perfect, and I had some trouble digesting the words without much gaps.

The story has an interesting premise and is definitely one of a kind for me.
Overall an alright book, it’s short so it doesn’t hurt to give it a try just from the interesting concept and magic alone.
