Polk (and Helen, our gumshoe) charmed my socks off with this sapphic noir novella. I don't think I'll ever tire of this type of angels and demons trope, especially not if they're as well-dressed and charming as Marlowe.

Will I be likening this to 1940s Chicago sapphic Constantine (2005)? Yes, and happily. Helen is certainly more earnest than our boy John, but they both have a strict timeline and big secrets.

What really sealed the deal for me, what absolutely sold it, was Edith. Edith and Helen's relationship is rock solid. The secrets they carry day to day do not destabilize their commitment to one another, and that rules. I love lesbians!

I absolutely loved the writing style especially in the beginning of the book. The second half of the book lost a little bit of its inital spark and character. But even if it felt somewhat rushed towards the end i still really enjoyed it!
