I had such a hard time getting through this book. It was only until the 'after' part and actually the last few pages that this book got interesting. I wish I had experienced that earlier on, though I am still glad I finished it.

Wow. I really am speechless right now. I dont want to spoil it for any first time readers. but wow. read it. Definitely not your average YA book. I will be reading more by John Green, thats for sure.

if i was 13 i probably would’ve loved this book. but i’m not 😭 it’s a very john green novel…. but it’s just not all that spectacular. very character driven which i love but the characters feel really shallow sometimes especially when it gets to these so called “deep” moments where they’re philosophizing about life (of course) and it feels out of place especially for someone like miles. he’s a very teen boy protagonist but there’s nothing in particular that really makes him interesting. like at allllll. his parents are nice, he’s middle class, he’s lowkey a loser, and yet he’s looking for the Great Perhaps…. i could almost get behind this. he does go through a lot of development especially because of alaska and his deep crush on her but also. what’s going on with alaska’s character?!?! i say this in the sense that she feels very messy and sometimes under explained which is the point i suppose considering her death being the midpoint of the story? but she feels quirky just for the sake of being quirky and this unfortunately makes her annoying at times. i liked the build up to the midpoint but after she died the book reallyyyy lost its pacing for me because of the way the colonel and miles just went running around in circles trying to understand her death. lots of talking but not that much investigating which really made things dry. the junior prank was cool though and very alaska-esque which i enjoyed <3 and the end??? i felt like takumi really felt like a plot device sometimes and less of an important character especially with the whole note he left at the end. that definitely could’ve been utilized earlier on and wasn’t ughhhh. but ok this review is getting annoyingly long so i’ll wrap it up: it’s an okay book and not john’s green best but it does have some savory moments that make it worth a car read or something like that

The quality that I best liked about this book is its strong atmosphere--I could picture (probably from my own similar experience) the feeling & life of the campus in which Miles lived, and the types of adventures that he got into with his friends.
