One of the most well rounded books I’ve ever read. Every little thing that could be spoken about when it comes to a war against zombies is explained and explored. Using an oral history format is really different for the genre, and while it didn’t lead to a beat for beat story, it painted a fantastic mosaic of how the world would react to a threat. Every speaker sounds human and distinct from one another, and they have very different opinions on decisions that get made through the course of the book. My main critique is that I just didn’t find it THAT scary. It’s tense definitely, and gory to be sure, but there were very few moments where I felt myself feeling scared at all. I think that’s due to the macro scale of the book and that everything is in the past tense, so you know the speaker survives. One of the most unique horror books I have read, however, and a must read for any zombie fans. It’s so much better than the movie

A masterpiece of zombie media. Blurs the line between fiction and actual 'history' quite often - almost scarily realistic in its pessimistic (but very believable) portrayal of the responses of different countries to an apocalyptic scenario. Also covers many areas of society and many smaller groups, rather than just the larger powers and their militaries. The format is really cool too - the interview style of each chapter is very immersive.

Warnings - some heavy language in certain accounts - understandably - and pretty grisly violence at times, naturally given zombies are involved.
