I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much as I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which covered Angelou's childhood. This one covers her late teens/early twenties as a young mother searching for work and her place in the world. I think it was less cohesive of a narrative, and honestly found some of the writing disjointed - Angelou would often switch subjects abruptly during a chapter. I also found some of her judgments on others disappointing, for example her options of and actions towards the lesbian couple near the beginning of the book.

I was gripped despite knowing that these memoirs would eventually have a 'happy ending'. Angelou writes beautifully, honestly and thoughtfully about the circumstances and choices of her youth.

I love Maya Angelou so much. I don't think anything can top the first book but this was really good

Its so amazing how Maya Angelou is able to talk her own pretty dark story and weave it into the most beautiful poetry and prose.

Really enthralling and deranged stuff here. Had a great time.
