Another great volume in the Syrenka series. Now we get to see just how well Eviana faces having to lead her clan...along side Kain. We get to see just where the Selkies loyalties lie, and just where Brendan's do as well. We get to watch face off after face off with Lucian and we get to see Jeremiah again. One of my favorite parts of the book was the introduction of the Council. It was neat to see the different personalities represented there. The end was a SUPER mega cliffhanger, so I was extremely happy that I waited to read these until I had all three books! I'm happily invested in book three already!
What worked: Again, another series that doesn't fall prey to the second book curse. Eviana has to deal with her new responsibilities as the co-leader of the clan and her own grief at the same time. Not only that but the poor lass has been dumped by her boyfriend . I'm finding it difficult to give Betrayal a review because it was just so....brilliant! It had everything you could want: the right amount of pace, twists and turns, another hottie by the name of Graham, honesty, witty comebacks and betrayal of course!
Eviana is really fleshed out in this book, you get to see her more playful and sarcastic side (which I love!). You get to see her at the highest of her highs and the lowest of the lows. A lot of lesser heroines would have crumpled by now but this girl just keeps shaking herself off and dealing with it. Amber deals with Eviana's inner turmoil so beautifully, every decision and thought she has just resounds with me!
The writing is exactly as I remembered - crafted to perfection and gripping! More creatures are added to the Syrenka world as well as some pretty cool powers. What I liked even more is that the current residents of the Syrenka world are built on as well. You learn more about Selkies, mermaids and our favourite characters make more appearances: Abhainn, Malcolm, even Jeremiah! ;)
What irked: I need to find a beach and grow a tail because blimey, Eviana is beating them off with a stick! Love triangles frustrate me but how would you like a love SQUARE?! Yeah that's right, three guys are chasing after our beloved heroine. Lucky beggar....If I knew that would be the case before I started Betrayal, I probably would have sighed, palm to the face and snarked through the book. Want to know the worst part? I did ALL OF THAT but the love square worked. Possibly for the first time ever, my "irking" section isn't technically an irk. What irks me is that I don't have three hotties pining for me! Eviana is a real gem though and handles it really well so I'll forgive the lucky devil ;)
Recommended to: Fans of mythical creatures and it's a given that you need to read Promises first! Taking into account my whole review and the fact that Amber Garr pulled off a Love Square so well while making me write an irk that is actually an irk about MYSELF, I would give this book....***5 Stars - My mind is in bits on the floor, that's how good this book is!***

So many betrayals. Poor Eviana! I found myself fighting to keep my eyes open in order to finish this book last night. I HAD to know what happens and then --- I must wait for book 3!
If the first book in this series, Promises, was good, the second one was even better. I think it was an amazing continuation of Eviana's story.
In Betrayal we find a more mature Eviana, one that is trying to cope with everything that has happened to her. I admired her a lot in this book. Her parents are dead, she becomes clan leader and tries to stop a war, she's supposed to take care of her younger sister and her boyfriend left for God knows how long. I'd be terrified, angry. She was too, but she didn't let that fear and anger take over her. She found her strength in those feelings. What's not to admire? There was this moment where my heart broke for Eviana and I felt so much anger towards the people hurting her. I'm very curious how will she deal with those people in Arise, the final book in this trilogy.
I loved the pacing. There's always something happening, usually something surprising. I liked that a lot, the fact that I couldn't predict anything. I have to admit that I thought the traitor was someone else entirely. So I was very surprised when I saw how wrong I was. But I loved that. And I love that we get to meet some new creatures and learn more about the syrenkas and their world.
I love the cover (if you haven't noticed yet, this series has amazing covers!) and I think it's perfect for Betrayal.
I have to find out what happens next and how the story ends. If you haven't read this series yet, don't wait any longer. It's amazing!
