the pacing was a little funky and the characters weren't anything special, but there were some genuinely unsettling moments in this story that i really love when reading horror. definitely leans more into the atmosphere than the action, but i was okay with that.

See what happens when you go canoeing and aren't playing attention? And you aren't really friends?

Two young men should have listened to the older guy, but no they knew better.

Silly buggers.

The atmosphere is really well done. I just wanted a feeling of more meance.

Read for the Classic Horror Square.

Delightfully scary story.
dark mysterious tense

Two guys go out for a long trip with their canoe, and get freaked out by nature.

Imagine Tolkien describing a nature scene (you know.. in all of its glorious detail), except it goes on for the entire book, and it is just describing a river and willow bushes, with boring characters we know nothing about and so don't care for. Oh and nothing happens. At all. And Algernon Blackwood, sorry, is clearly no Tolkien.
Boring boring boring.
