Tense, bleak, fast-paced—this was such an interesting read. It’s super short, but has a full story in it, where you’re on that river with those two characters, seeing and hearing everything they do.

all-time classic writing here...

A short story about two travellers on the Danube and their experience with a wild, unseen malevolence.

Blackwood is a master at describing the beauty, awe, and terror of the natural world, and 'The Willows' showcases this ability perfectly.
adventurous dark mysterious tense fast-paced

The only reason it’s not 5 stars is because of the description of the Danube river that was just waaaay too long. Otherwise, this slapped.

Reminiscent in several ways of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy and published > 100 years before it.

This story got creepier and creepier. Towards the end my heart was racing. Fans of Lovecraft will like this...no surprise since Lovecraft himself loved it. Very thick on environment and the unknown.
