This was a fun, short, spooky story. Two men on an island and some weird things start happening...this story took me through a few subway rides!

I think this short story would have hit a little differently for me if I had read it before The Hollow Places by Kingfisher. Of course I learned about it from her Authors note, but had I not I would have been more invested in the original. She wrote her book as a bit of a sequel but she brought over basically the entire world of the willows into her story.
This is a very interesting concept for a horror short story. I loved the idea in Kingfisher’s book, but I feel like a little more imagery of what the strange interdimensional creatures could do would have been better. Algernon was fantastic at creating an atmosphere and building tension. He was incredibly descriptive and could really set the scene.
For those looking for a cosmic horror piece, I would check this one out!

A really scary short story that left me feeling unsettled with shivers up my spine.
4.5 ⭐
Imagine you're on a little camping trip with your pal, off to re-acquaint yourself with nature, explore new lands deep within the forests, getting lost in the thrill of adventure. On your first night starting to feel a little bit of anxiety to the sounds that tickle your ears by your tent when laying down to rest. Your imagination starts to run away with itself, fear starts to develop around the could be's and what if's of the vast, surrounding, seemingly endless woods, hoping that there's nothing actually out there. We've all been there right?
Now imagine those fears are further explored by an author that is beautifully articulate with wonderful, poetic yet viscerally terrifying prose. A masterclass ability to captivate the imagination into a rapidly developing nightmare, so much so that you never (or at least not for a while) want to step foot near anything that resembles a tent or a river or a woodland ever again....
(maybe a slight exaggeration)
That's pretty much The Willows.
