The Willows by Algernon Blackwood is about two men who enjoy exploring the wilderness until they come across a river delta of the Danube and the unsettling things they discover there.
Thoughts while reading:
-This story was brought to my attention when I started an anthology and the editor mentioned that this book resonated with his idea of ‘weird fiction’
-The story wasn’t grabbing me at first but the atmosphere eventually builds
-I like ‘the Swede’ but the narrator drives me crazy
The book managed to convey a strong sense of atmosphere and wrongness that caused the characters to slowly unravel, but I found that because I didn't connect strongly with the characters, it affected the level of tension I felt.
Overall, I would give it a 3 out of 5

I read this after reading The Hollow Places by T Kingfisher, which borrows heavily from it. This is a brilliant piece of otherworldly horror, and I loved it.
