Gute Idee. Wirklich gruselig ist es jedoch nicht. Gut geschrieben.

One of the scariest stories I read in a while. The author excelled at capturing the awe and danger of nature while adding a suspenseful supernatural presence that added another layer of dread.

Wow, I think Lovecraft must have found his blueprint when he read this. This is a fantastic account of humans stumbling onto a crack in reality that reveals entities and a cosmos so vast that human worries are rendered completely meaningless and inane.

One of my favorite works of horror. Just as excellent as I remembered it. Ever since I first read it, some of the images depicted within have remained etched into my brain. I love how different environments are personified for different effects; we begin with the Danube, described almost like an old, familiar friend, while the personification of the titular willows serves to emphasize their inhumanity and overall sense of otherworldliness. By the end of the novella it’s clear that the narrator’s early attempts to tame the natural landscape through personified language fail when faced with the unknown and the unknowable—things that defy not only language but thought. The sense of dread throughout is unparalleled and the ending is killer.

The Willows was a fun, quick listen. The story heavily relies on imagery to take the reader to the setting of the story. Although this location gives the main character uneasy/frightful feelings, the description is very beautiful and made me wish I was reading this outside on a river bank somewhere.

The story itself is pretty simple: Two companions make camp on an island that clearly doesn’t regularly host human occupants. They both separately get more and more paranoid and fearful, and ultimately they realize the island is the land of some sort of group of spirits.

I enjoyed the story, it had a good progression of showing two different people’s responses to and coping mechanisms for this descent into seeming madness. You could feel the build up of tension in the story, and the character’s fears become very interlaced with the nature and the setting around them. I did however feel a bit let down by the ending. The whole story consists of only two characters, and in my opinion, getting off this island should have come down to their decisions and actions. I was looking forward to seeing if both would make it off the island or only the narrator (since he was telling this story in past tense), and I was imagining that some crazy twist must be coming. Instead the ending felt like a cop out, and a random peasant appeared and instantly died as a sacrifice to the “spirits” in place of either of the two companions.

I would still recommend the read for the captivating imagery and realistic character development that was able to take place over the short span of the book.
