'We were the first human influences upon this island, and we were not wanted. The willows were against us.'
A nightmare of a canoe trip. I loved the sense of dread and terror as these two men realize they've come ashore to something sentient on this tiny island. It's a little understated compared to The Wendigo but the idea of the trees creeping in is so scary!
'I never longed for the sun as I longed for it then in the awful blackness of that summer night.'

Would have been a lot better if a lot shorter. Not very scary, not even if I tried to put myself in a mind-set of an earlier reader (compared to, say, Dracula, or House on the Borderland, both old and both creepy as hell).
Seemed a bit weird to keep call the 2nd-most-important character in the novella "the Swede" when it's clear in the book the narrator does indeed know his name, don't quite see the point of that. And for those of you who like incident and plot, well, a few things happen, but the main characters pretty much do absolutely nothing except sleep, eat, worry, panic, faint, etc. etc. They are completely and utterly passive throughout.
(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!
