Blackwood's beautiful descriptions of nature take an eerie turn as the natural envelops an area that is a rubbed thin by something beyond this dimension.

What a peculiar find—
Psychological and environmental horror at their best with some wonderful imagery. The Danube sings to the moon and shouts at the rain, while our narrator and his travelling ~companion~ face shifts in their own reality. V cool

Nicely spooky, if a bit too old-fashioned to be truly scary. It's definitely enjoyable and I see why Lovecraft liked it; it's got that lovely unearthly (if not quite eldritch) Lovecraftian vibe.

This story got creepier and creepier. Towards the end my heart was racing. Fans of Lovecraft will like this...no surprise since Lovecraft himself loved it. Very thick on environment and the unknown.

I absolutely loved Hollow Places by T Kingfisher and she mentioned this book as her inspiration for that novel so I had to check it out.

There are 2 things here that kept me from rating this book higher. One, I read this on my phone from Hoopla and I detest reading on my phone. Second, since this was written in 1907 the prose is of course different and required me to put in a little more effort to read the story. Both of these combined found me rushing through to reach the end of the tale, and I never felt scared or creeped out.

On a positive note, this has a really good atmosphere and I think if I were to reread it in physical format someday I would enjoy it more.
