I put off reading this book because so many people claimed it was so bad and just a retelling of blood and ash. Do not listen to them! There are def some developments sprinkled in and while most of the book takes place during the first blood and ash, you get so many new scenes from Cas that this truly felt like a different story up until they leave for New Haven, which frankly I was excited to get those scenes from his pov

I absolutely loved reading this book. From Cas's perspective. So so good. Only thing that could have given us 5 is writing the actual moment he realized he fell in love. Captivating. Helped me understand the whole story better. Almost like a Re-cap and short reprive before diving into the story again. So good. So entertaining.

This is a retelling of the first 4 book but from Hawke’s POV. The ending is the only thing new.

"We were two pieces that fit together, and our souls had recognized that, even if neither of us had."
Unpopular opinion, apparently, but i loved this book so much!!! I loved being able to recap everything from Cas' POV.
I was fully prepared for this book to be Cas justifying his actions, but, it was the opposite. He's done some shady shit, and it never sat right with me (specifically him having sex with Poppy before she knew the whole truth) and he acknowledged how wrong that was of him, and of course other things he's done. I never knew how much I would need this book moving forward. I know a lot of people hate it, but this was refreshing for me. Even though it was a bit long, I loved Cas' POV through these events.
It's so crazy to think about how far these characters have come from FBAA. It's actually mind-blowing. Even from ACOGB. The character development is phenomenal, not only with Poppy, but Cas and Kieran as well. It's so hard to write memorable minor characters in a fantasy book, because there's usually so much going on and so many people, but the minor characters in this series really stand out. The Wolven/Draken and their relationships' with Poppy and Cas are my favorite!! Chosen family!!
The way he loves her, so much, just makes my heart swell!
"... And still, she was so damn beautiful to me. My heartmate. My Queen. Not a goddess but a Primal- the Primal of Blood and Bone. Of Life and Death."
Cas' character is written so well. He's so swoon-worthy. The way he talks about Poppy gives me butterflies. Also, the subtle characteristics he notices about her are beautiful. I love men written by women!!!
"You're an absolutely stunning, murderous little creature."
That ending rocked meeeeee.
