You know those prequels where you go, "OMG THAT'S SO COOL I TOTALLY GET WHERE THE ORIGINAL BOOK COMES FROM OMGOMGOMG THIS IS SO AWESOME YAY I'M SO HAPPY!!!!!" This was not one of these books. Yes, you understand how bad the earth became and see the journey of Mark and Trina through Mark's dreams, but I don't feel a special connection between this book and The Maze Runner. I was really hoping it would explain more about WICKED and what it was about, but it really doesn't. There's actually barely any mention of it. And in the book jacket it talks about Mark and Trina, but the story is really about Mark and Alec. The book was well written and has an interesting story line that keeps you reading, but it lacks the oomph that The Maze Runner has. One of my biggest issues was the total fighting superiority of Mark and Alec. Supposedly Alec is this war veteran who is probably 40 years old or older (was his age ever mentioned?). I understand that he has war smarts, but against a hoard of crazy man-eating people, does he really stand a chance? I can't tell you how many times Mark and Alec fight a very large group of people and win. They are battered, starved, sleep-deprived, and hopelessly outnumbered, yet they are still able to get away without too much damage. There is never a point where they actually lose. It's all just way too improbable. Plus, the numerous amount of times this happens makes the book boring and predictable. Basically: oh no, we get caught, something happens so we can escape, a huge mob chases us, we violently fight them off, now let's go on with our original mission (), let's do this thing that might get us caught...then repeat. The only parts I really looked forward to were Mark's flashbacks about how he and Trina survived through the Flares and horror afterward. At least it seemed somewhat realistic. Or more realistic then the rest of the book.

This book started out slow for me, but really started picking up towards the middle and then I LOVED the ending. It completely took me by surprise, especially as somebody who did not enjoy The Scorch Trials or The Death Cure, I didn’t connect to the way those action scenes were written for some reason, and yet I thoroughly enjoyed the action scenes in this book. The found family trope is always top tier, and I did cry a good amount in the last few chapters.

Surprisingly my favorite Maze Runner book.
Not nearly as good as the trilogy, just all action but it was nicely connected to the trilogy without the story being about them
