I just didn’t like it at all… it made me so uncomfortable, it was so raw and I hated the writing:( I expected more from this book, not just normalized pedophilia and colonialism.

I usually enjoy this kind of stream-of-consciousness narrative, but here it is nearly impossible to follow the narrative. That might be because the narrative is very slowly paced, and nothing much happens for large stretches of time. The book does provide some interesting commentary, but overall it was not a good experience.
For example, the main character's sexual relationship which is consensual, but would still be considered pedophilia, and the fact that the supporting characters react more to the relationship being interracial (rather than the age difference)

I want to reread this book later in the year. But for now I have completed my "hot but depressed reading list."😂 That's January...
Favourite quotes:
  • "I already know a thing or two. I know it’s not clothes that make women beautiful or otherwise, nor beauty care, nor expensive creams, nor the distinction or costliness of their finery. I know the problem lies elsewhere. I don’t know where. I only know it isn’t where women think."

  • "I ask him if it’s usual to be sad, as we are."

  • "At night we go and have dinner in town. He gives me my shower, washes me, rinses me, he adores that, he puts my make-up on and dresses me, he adores me."

  • "She says, I wasn’t like you, I found school much harder and I was very serious, I stayed like that too long, too late, I lost the taste for my own pleasure."

  • "And then he told her. Told her that it was as before, that he still loved her, he could never stop loving her, that he’d love her until death."
