Dark visceral police procedural thriller! I read this for a book club and found from the start the story very gripping. It's a dual narrative of both the main detective and the killer, which was unusual as I haven't seen this done before in a thriller. However the book did start to lack quickly for me.
At the start, the setting was good (Scotland) but as the story progressed I felt the setting was lost. There was no dialect and as I read on, I pictured the setting as generic, which was dissapointing. Some sub-plots made me feel uncomfortable as well as the killer perspective.
I felt it lacked as there was no backstory for the killer, in some novels backstory can also be uncomfortable as its more of a justifying "victim speech" but I feel this was needed as his past was alluded too but not explained.
The chapter of skydiving was kind of lost on me, but following discussion I can now see this alluded to the detecitve's mental health state and PTSD on his trauma before relocation.
I won't continue with the series but the book was a gripping thriller.
