Zawacki writes, "night is a country / where no one lived, and loved like a language, and left." This collection of poems speaks to the shadows of language, the ways in which we transcribe and translate the indescribable: landscape, winter, children's voices. Often composed in sonnets, these poems juxtapose photography and response, the language folding in on itself again and again in mimicry of image and technology.

"Mother shakes the little tree.
Otherwise the darkness

will read it and will
remain dark forever."
